This birth was no other. It was a birth in which the angels in heaven celebrated. A birth that was foretold from the beginning of time and was announced that a virgin would conceive. It was a birth which wise men sought, guided by a star, while heaven and nature rejoiced. It was the birth of “The King of the World” placed in a filthy manger. A birth that ushered in the kingdom of God, proclaiming; “Thy kingdom come thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:10)
It was a birth that would turn the world upside down, no longer making sense of the ways of man. “Blessed are you who are now hungry, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who are now weeping, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude and insult you, and denounce your name as evil on account of the Son of Man. Rejoice and leap for joy on that day! Behold, your reward will be great in heaven” (Luke 6:21-23). The first shall be last, the humble will be great, and the servant will be greater than his master. Yes, the world and its ways were turned upside down and inside out. It was a birth that saved mankind from its sin of self- sovereignty. It was the greatest birth of all, announced and celebrated for centuries. Do you know of another birth that has affected mankind so greatly? It is the wise men that seek him and the fools that reject him.
And, none had died as He had died. His death saved all who believe. As He hung on the cross, He said; “It is finished” there is nothing left to do. The great reversal had been completed. The sinless one paid for the sins of all. You can do nothing, He had done it all, and it is finished.
So as you celebrate this Christmas, celebrate His birth and rejoice in His death, which, by the way, is another great reversal–that is, for man to rejoice in death, but we do this, knowing that in His death we shall have life now and for eternity! Praise to the King of Kings, the greatest birth of all, our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ! Amen
