Jesus Answered the Call, Will You?

Through the Cross.revised Jesus Answered the Call, Will You?

Jesus was born to die so that we could live freely and eternally.  That was His calling and it came at the highest price that one can ever pay – His own life.  Holy week is the most important week in a Christian’s calendar.  It is a time of reflection; it is a time of introspection; it is a time of adoration.  Jesus paid for my guilty sins with His innocent sinless life.

2 Corinthians 5:21: “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

Every shameful sin that I will ever commit was covered by the shedding of His innocent blood.  He endured pain, ridicule and death beyond comprehension for my salvation.

Isaiah 53:5: But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.

When I truly ponder the sacrifice that He made just for little old me – I am humbled but I am thankful.

It is a gift that is invaluable, irrevocable, irreplaceable and all the more irresistible.

In honor of this precious gift, many of us make personal sacrifices during the Lenten season that involve refraining from certain behaviors or denying ourselves certain pleasures.  We start out making strong commitments to give up something or to do more of something and as the season progresses, we find ourselves wavering, indulging or just not doing.  One of the things I gave up for lent was playing Facebook’s Farmville because I was one of those devout players that overindulged to the detriment of more quality activities. I was doing good, refraining for 3 weeks, but by the fourth week, I found myself peeking at my fake farm and then completely falling off the wagon.  Can you imagine that? All I had to do was give up Farmville for 40 days and I couldn’t even do that! Thank God, I’m not God because if the responsibility of the world’s sins fell on my shoulders, we would all be dead.

Ephesians 2:1: “You were dead in your trespasses and sins.”

Jesus was called to do something that none of us will ever be able to do and He did it. More importantly, He did it willingly and while He paid the ultimate price, he gave it to us freely.

When I reflect on the cost of Jesus’ calling, I think about the cost of my personal calling.  We are all called to a higher purpose.  The question is – will we answer that call; and if we do, will we fulfill it at any cost? Anything that means anything comes at a cost.   Jesus did not hesitate to do what He did because he knew that the reward would more than exceed the cost.   Whatever we are being called to do today, let us take comfort in the fact that in God’s kingdom, the reward will always outweigh the cost of following His will.

Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

The cost of His call may be high; but the cost of not answering His call will be higher.    Our eternal salvation cost our Savior His life.  I shudder to think of where we would all be if Jesus hadn’t answered His Father’s call.
